I went to MVC on my lunchbreak and took the test for my permit, took like 20 minutes, I actually got 3 wrong cause I was rushing. Study up for a few days, relax and take your time. After that I was planning on just going to MVC and taking the road test and saying screw the BRC (Basic Rider Course), I went over my friends hosue and hopped on his OLD Honda I think it was like a 125, tried riding it up his driveway and failed miserably, wound up in his bushes and trees. Signed up for the BRC, took it like a month and a half later, they walk you through every aspect of it, rode a Yamaha TW, had a blast met a lot of really cool people, got my license. I honestly feel without the course I wouldn't have been able to pass the MVC test on the first try (probly not even the second), I definately wouldn't be as comfortable as I am with riding or as prepared. They don't go over everything and it is just low speed manuvering so when you start getting up to speed for the first time it is a little weird but you get comfortable with it pretty quick.
Rider Education charged 250 for the class, there's a Harley dealer in ocean that charges 250, most other Harley dealers charge 400>=, I really enjoyed my time with RiderED and will probly go back and hang out and be a "RAT", you RAT 1x you get a pin, 5x you get a free advanced rider course, 10x you get invited to the staff banquet at the end of the year.

Rider Ed provides helmets, I was fairly sure the Harley programs did too. They don't provide jackets, gloves, or boots though.
